Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is a distinctive type of hair loss which only affects females, it is also known as Androgenetic Alopecia. FPHL can occur as early as puberty but is most common amongst women after Menopause.
FPHL is a very common condition and affects many women. Studies have found the 40% of women will show signs of hair loss by the age of 50 and 55% of women ages 80 and over do not have a full head of hair.
Is it normal to lose hairs everyday?
Naturally your hair sheds between 100-150 hairs a day. This may seem like a huge amount but this is undetectable as the average human head holds up to 145,000 healthy hairs. It is very important that you brush your hair on a regular basis to get rid of shed hairs as it can cause more hair loss and matting. For someone who brushes their hair daily it will seem that a small amount of hair is lost, however if you only brush your hair twice a week you could brush out up to 450 hairs each time which could cause some women to be concerned. If you feel you have FPHL is it extremely important for you to brush your hair regularly and keep an eye on the amount of hair you lose.
Mild FPHL is globally the most common hair loss condition for women. This type of hair loss can be inherited from both maternal and paternal sides of the family as it is a genetically linked condition.
Mild FPHL can easily be disguised. There are many popular ways to make your hair look fuller, these include hair styling, scalp makeup, fibres or even extensions or hair pieces. If you chose to have extensions fitted into your hair there is no need to be concerned about them damaging your hair as they are fitting weight-for-weight by a fully trained extension specialist.
Although not as common as mild FPHL it is more difficult to disguise severe FPHL without hair replacement. Even though severe cases mean more hair loss, majority of the time its not drastic enough to require a full wig. If you have severe FPHL it is not advised to use scalp makeup as it is more detectable than if you have mild FPHL. If your hair is relatively thin we find that scalp makeup can be visible in certain lights and sunshine, especially if your hair density is less than 50%. We understand how this condition can cause a huge impact on your life and can be very stressful, which is why we will be here for you every step of the way.
